VISTA DETENTION FACILITY INFORMATION
Located just seven miles from downtown San Diego and seven miles from the Mexican border, the Chula Vista is at the center of one of the richest economic and culturally diverse zones in the United States. It also happens to be the location of the Vista Detention Facility.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, which is both the primary and largest law enforcement agency in San Diego County, runs the Vista Detention Facility. Nine incorporated cities within the county (Del Mar, Encinitas, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove, Poway, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach, and Vista) contract with the department for municipal law enforcement and public safety services, so if anyone is arrested in these areas, there is a good chance they will wind up incarcerated at Vista.
The Vista jail houses both male and female inmates who are awaiting trial. Built in 1978, it was designed with the intention of housing around 850-900 prisoners. The jail provides a wide variety of medical services, including infectious disease control, psychiatrists, dentists, nurses and physicians.
Inmates are allowed to use phones at anytime, but they cannot call friends or loved ones or even attorneys until they have been fully booked in to this facility’s computer system.
Bail can be posted at this jail, but due to busy nights and crowded conditions, it takes anywhere from 4-6 hours once a bail bond has been posted for an arrestee to be released from custody.
The Chula Vista facility is one of only two Type II facilities in Southern California. It began as a Type I Jail, holding local inmates up to 96 hours for court pre-arraignment. Then it was converted into a Type I/II Combination facility, which means that in addition to the pre-arraignment inmates, state inmates for up to sixty days.
The Vista Detention Facility is around 9,000 square feet in size, holds 48 beds and about 13 cells. It is a state of the art facility that cost around four million dollars to build.
WHO’S IN JAIL
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department has a Who’s In Jail online research page that serves as a good recourse for helping people find inmates in both the Vista Detention Center and other jails located throughout San Diego. You will find all the public information about an inmate that you need on this page.
